Farewell ‘Captain Jack’

Associated Press:

OAKLAND, Calif. — “Captain Jack” is no more.

Disgruntled Golden State star Stephen Jackson asked to relinquish his captain title during a meeting Tuesday with Warriors coach Don Nelson and general manager Larry Riley.

“Don’t try to dig into it, that’s just how I feel,” Jackson said. “I don’t want to be a role model. … Being captain was overrated to me, anyway. You don’t do anything but go out before the game and talk to the refs. I don’t want to do that, anyway.”

Nelson accepted Jackson’s request and called it a “good thing” on the heels of the emotional swingman’s two-game suspension for an outburst directed at the coach early in Friday’s preseason game against the Lakers in Los Angeles.

“Well, the prodigal son has returned,” Nelson said after Jackson rejoined the team for Tuesday’s practice. “It’s good to have Jack back. We’re going to keep him in the same position as far as my starting three is concerned.”

The fact he even acquired the role of captain is mind-boggling.

This is the same guy who followed Ron Artest into the stands during the infamous 2004 brawl at the Palace in Detroit — and he was a captain? Who’s bright idea was that?

Jackson is a talented perimeter player, but there are no circumstances in which he should have been anointed as a team leader.

The best part about this story: Jackson didn’t relinquish his captaincy for the better of the team (considering his constant negative media attetion), he did it for himself. Big surprise. The captain role meant nothing to him but a senseless trip to midcourt before the game to talk to the refs. No wonder this team hasn’t been able to build on its trip to the Western Semis in 2007 and has missed the playoffs the past two seasons.

Mr. Jackson — you are the epitome of the spoiled athlete that the common man simply doesn’t understand. You’re here for fame, money and a little bit of basketball.

These recent headlines aren’t your fault though, because there’s no way in hell you should have been a captain in the first place.
